Lunch menu was well worth it. The fish was well selected and aged, the signature dessert a pleasant finish, and service impeccable. They even showed photos of every fish–a delightful surprise. Easily one of the best value omakase experiences we have had in New York.

Worth the $$$. They called to move our reservation back 2 hours because the fish order was delayed from Tokyo- thats how fresh the fish is!! Staff was attentive and polite. Sushi chefs are masters of their craft. No corners were cut- everything was fresh- even wasabi was grated in front of us.

It was my second time visiting Sushi Ginza Onodera NYC. A/C was not working that day, which made me sweaty. Unfortunately sushi was not that great. Every dish did wow me last time I visited there.
I wish one of the original chefs prepared sushi for us. Chef Hiro only wiped the table for us…lol. I don’t see my chef’s photo on the restaurant instagram. I guess he’s new, but the service and overall quality for dinner omakase did not meet my expectations.
I thought Sushi Ginza Onodera NYC was the best sushi omakase place but not anymore.

Overall experience has been very pleasant one. The service was attentive and welcoming. The vibe was very neat and simple. There are three different Omakase to choose from for lunch. Nothing really stands out to me but all the taste was there. There just wasn’t a wow factor in each Nigiri. I did fairly enjoy the appetizer and dessert. I would recommend to those that love Omakase to give it a try for lunch. I would definitely go back to give its dinner a try.

Nisemonodera!

The actual cuisine and philosophy is gimmicky, meant to impress the sensibilities of novices and tourists... It's like a simpleton's idea of what high Japanese cuisine should look like, the same way that Trump is a poor person's idea of what a rich person should look like.

The dishes featured an excess of gold leaf and black caviar, heavy sauces and emulsions, everything very heavily oversalted, occasionally oversugared, with too many ingredients per dish and a criminal mixing of proper musenmai sushi rice and brown rice (for an "unusual" appearance and glue-like texture).

The relatively young head chef seems to be slightly in over his head on how to efficiently run a kitchen or a sushi bar. The waits between pieces are interminable -- our omakase course of maybe 17 pieces (of which 4 were appetizers and 1 was a soup) followed by a dessert, took 2 hours and 50 minutes. It felt like around 7 minutes between pieces, on average. There was no sense of calm, smooth, knowing precision. At all times he seemed tense or even rushed. He had only one understudy, who was idle half the time.

Onodera is situated in a cavernous space where the first priority in all things seems to be Instagram-readiness. The omakase was defined by a very slow rate of service of what I would deem unexceptional sushi considering the high $550 per person price tier. Not bad, just unimpressive compared to what it should have been.

Great omakase. It wasn’t the best sushi I’ve had in New York City, but for the price you get great value. For lunch, it was $350 for 2 people, tip included. All of the pieces were really tasty. I mentioned I didn’t like ikura and the chef replaced the ikura in the first dish with uni, which was fantastic.

My husband took me here for lunch to celebrate my birthday and honestly, it was one of the best sushi course i ever had! Originally from Japan, this place has the most fresh tasting fish I’ve ever tried with the chef cutting each piece and placing on our plate in such artistic manner (i was extremely mesmerized sitting in front at the counter).

We decided to go with the $150 seasonal course inclusive of 1 appetizer (steamed custard egg with salmon roe), 12 pieces of nigiri, negitoro hand roll, miso soup and dessert. Everything we ate were so good with each pieces of nigiri melting in our mouth. My favorite would have to be the Japanese Baracuda (which I’ve never tried nor heard of) as it gave just a right amount of smoky taste. For dessert, they brought out the matcha green tea coconut mousse with cafe-flavored ice cream (accompanied by a happy birthday song by everyone in the room lol).

If you’re ever in the mood for a good sushi and feel like spoiling yourself (or going for a special occasion), then this place is highly recommended!
